BEHIND THE SCENES
One of Yoko’s standout creations is the
Origami Hana necklace, which is usually
made with a knit fabric. “There was an
earlier design that incorporated origami
techniques that was inspired by
shurik-
ens
(ninja stars),” says Yoko of a piece
she made two years ago. “I was happy
with it, so that led to more origami-
inspired designs.”
1.
Using a rolling chalk marker, Yoko
precisely measures a section of the knit
fabric, which will then be cut into a long
strip.
2.
To make sure the edges on the fabric
are crisp, she irons the strip. Having a
smooth surface is essential before she
starts folding.

Prior to sewing anything in place,
Yoko pins the fabric.

The stitched folds result in a lovely,
origami effect.

Yoko sews the braided rope to the
knit portion of the necklace.
